Overview

The Prophet's march to Dumat al-Jandal in Rabi' al-Awwal of the 5th year AH: he set out from Medina with a thousand Muslims, guided by a man of Banu Udhra called Madhkur 1.

The route

The Prophet set out five nights before the end of Rabi' al-Awwal of the 5th year AH, and appointed Siba' ibn Urfuta over Medina 2. He travelled by night and hid by day, until he drew near Dumat and took some of their livestock and herders 2. The text says Dumat is fifteen nights from Medina, a distance that does not fix the day of arrival 2.

In Dumat

The people of Dumat fled in every direction, so when the Muslims reached their open ground they found no one. The Prophet stayed for some days and sent out raiding parties and divided the army into detachments, but they found no one 2.

The return

The Prophet then returned to Medina, and in that expedition made a truce with Uyayna ibn Hisn 2. The expedition is placed in the context after the Minor Badr: the Prophet ﷺ remained in Medina for six months, and then news reached him of the tribes around Dumat 2.

The Expedition of Dumat al-Jandal

In Rabi' I 5 AH (August 626 CE), the Prophet led a 1,000-strong expedition to Dumat al-Jandal on the borders of Syria to secure the trade routes against marauding tribes; the gathering dispersed, and the Muslims established security and concluded non-aggression terms with tribal chiefs.
