Overview

A piece of leather written in Kufic script, bearing the text of a land grant to Tamim al-Dari and his brothers: Hebron, al-Marsum, Bayt Aynun and Bayt Ibrahim. 2

Al-Umari's inspection

Ibn Fadl Allah al-Umari examined it himself in 745 AH, when Nasir al-Din Muhammad ibn al-Khalili al-Tamimi al-Dari brought it to him. It is kept in a black cloth of cotton and silk, from the sleeve of the caliph al-Mustadi', in an ebony box wrapped in silk. 2

A copy was made from it in the hand of al-Mustadi' himself, and it states that Ali wrote it and that Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman witnessed it. Al-Umari mentions that al-Safadi examined it and recorded it in his Tadhkira. 2

Afterwards

Al-Qalqashandi mentions that it remained in the hands of the Tamimi custodians of the sanctuary of al-Khalil until about 821 AH, who used it as proof against those who disputed with them. 2

When the stipends issued Umar sent Zaynab bint Jahsh hers; 'God forgive Umar — my sisters were worthier of sharing this than I' — 'it is all yours' — she veiled it with cloth, had Barza bint Rafi' take fistfuls to her kinsfolk and orphans till five hundred and eighty remained beneath, and prayed: 'God, let no stipend of Umar's reach me past this year' — and she died. Ibn Shihab's register: twelve thousand to the consummated wives, six each to Juwayriya and Safiyya as fay'-born, five thousand to Muhajir Badris, four to Ansari Badris, sarih and halif and mawla equal; Mus'ab ibn Sa'd's: six thousand Badris, ten thousand the mothers, Aisha plus two thousand for the Prophet's love; and of their five Ajam, Tamim al-Dari and Bilal.
