Summary

Hawazin's knight and poet and chief of Banu Jusham; a very old, blind man carried in his howdah on the day of Hunayn. He denounced Malik ibn Awf's plan of driving out the dependants and the wealth, and was killed at Awtas 1.

His stand at Hunayn

When the people alighted at Awtas, Durayd heard the children crying and the sheep bleating; he summoned Malik ibn Awf and said: "Malik, you have become your people's chief, and this is a day that will have days after it — why do I hear the camels' moaning, the donkeys' braying and the infants' crying?" Malik answered: "I drove the people's wealth and women with them so every man fights for his family and his property." Durayd rebuked him: "a sheep-herder, by God! Does anything turn back the routed? If the day is yours nothing but a man with his sword will help you; and if it is against you, you are disgraced in your family and your wealth" 2.

His death

After Hunayn's rout Rabi'a ibn Rufay' al-Sulami caught up with him at Awtas in his litter and struck him with his sword — to no effect. Durayd told him: "how ill your mother armed you! Take this sword of mine, strike with it and raise it off the bones" — and he killed him with his own sword 3.

For young visitors
