Overview
Jalal al-Din Ubaydallah ibn Yunus, vizier of the caliph al-Nasir li-Din Allah. The caliph placed him over a large army, and sent him on 3 Safar 584 AH to help Qizil against the sultan Tughril. 1
The defeat at Diya Marj
The two armies met on 8 Rabi' al-Awwal at the Diya of Marj near Hamadhan. The army of Baghdad was defeated and dispersed. He stood firm, with a copy of the Qur'an and a sword, until a man from Tughril's army captured him, and what he had of treasure, arms and mounts was seized. 1
Ibn al-Athir relates that Salah al-Din had expected his defeat, because of his recent appointment and his lack of experience in war. 1 He took part in the defeat at Diya Marj.
