جساس بن مرة

Jasas ibn Murra of Banu Shayban: when his aunt al-Basus cried shame over her guest's wounded camel he knew honour pointed at his own breast, stalked Kulayb and speared him — 'a thrust for which Wa'il's sons will gather dancing tomorrow' — lighting the forty-year Basus war 1.

Overview

Jasas ibn Murra ibn Dhuhl ibn Shaybān al-Bakri, the killer of Kulayb ibn Rabi'a. 2

The killing of Kulayb

Ibn al-Athir relates that Kulayb shot the udder of a she-camel belonging to a neighbour of Jasas's maternal aunt al-Basus, who cried out "Oh, my humiliation!" Jasas understood that Kulayb had brought death upon his own chest, so he watched for an opening in Kulayb until he came upon him and stabbed him. 2

When he was reproached, he once said to his father that it was a stab for which the Banu Wa'il would gather to dance tomorrow. 2

The war of al-Basus

The war of al-Basus between Bakr and Taghlib blazed up over his killing and lasted forty years. He is from Bakr ibn Wa'il. 2

حرب البسوس

The Basus war, the longest and most storied of the Arabs' days: when the mare-camel Sarab strayed into Kulayb's forbidden spring pasture he shot her udder as threatened, and al-Basus's cry of shame — 'wa-dhalah!' — told her nephew Jasas ibn Murra that honour demanded blood; he speared Kulayb ibn Rabi'a, the Taghlibi lord under whom all Ma'add had united, and Kulayb's brother al-Muhalhil spent forty years exacting the feud between Bakr and Taghlib.
