كليب بن ربيعة

كليب بن ربيعة

Kulayb (Wa'il) ibn Rabi'a of Taghlib — 'little whelp' for the puppy he would beat and leave howling to mark his pleasure-grounds; bearer of Rabi'a's banner, leader of Ma'add at Khazzaz and one of only three men all Ma'add united behind, whose swagger grew until he fenced off the very rain-pools; Jasas ibn Murra speared him over the camel Sarab, and the Basus war began 1.

Overview

Kulayb ibn Rabi'a al-Taghlabi, of the Banu Taghlib. His name was Wa'il ibn Rabi'a. 2

His title and standing

He was called Kulayb because he used to take with him a pup of a dog, which he would strike and throw into whatever meadow pleased him, so that no one would approach it. The banner of Rabi'a passed to him, and Mudar gathered only under three men of whom he was the third. He was the commander of Mudar on the day of Khazaz, when he broke the hosts of Yemen. 2

His death

He was filled with pride and tyranny until he would guard the places of the clouds. He was killed by Jassas ibn Murra al-Shaybani, when he shot the udder of a she-camel of his neighbour from the Jurm, and this led to the war of al-Basus. He was the brother of al-Muhalhil. 2

Banu Taghlib ibn Wa'il

Banu Taghlib ibn Wa'il of Rabi'a, many of them Christian in the Jazira; famed for Zur'a ibn al-Nu'man's words to Umar — 'a people of Arabs who would scorn the jizya' — so he compounded with them for double the sadaqa taken of Muslims on land and herds, not foreigners' jizya, on condition they not Christianise their children, a clause over which jurists differed and Ali censured their breach; of them is Malik ibn Tawq, lord of al-Rahba.
