Summary

Mu'adh ibn Amr ibn al-Jamuh al-Khazraji, one of the two Ansari youths who struck Abu Jahl on the day of Badr 1.

The blow on Abu Jahl

Ibn Ishaq relates from him that he heard the people saying "Abu al-Hakam cannot be reached", so he made that his affair; he charged him and struck a blow that sent his foot flying off with half his shin. Then his son Ikrama struck him on the shoulder and threw his hand off — it hung by a strip of his side's skin, and he fought that day dragging it until he stretched it free and cast it aside 2. Then his brother Mu'awwidh ibn Afra' passed by Abu Jahl while he lay hamstrung and finished him; afterwards Abdullah ibn Mas'ud took off his head 3.

When the Prophet asked the two youths which of them had killed him and each said "I", he looked at the two swords and said: "you both killed him", and awarded Abu Jahl's spoil to Mu'adh since Mu'awwidh was killed in the same battle 1 4. Mu'adh remained until the time of Uthman ibn Affan 2.
