Overview

Muslim ibn Aqil ibn Abi Talib, a cousin of al-Husayn ibn Ali (may God be pleased with him). Al-Husayn sent him to Kufa in 60 AH in response to messengers from its people. 1

In Kufa

He stayed in the house of Hani ibn Urwa al-Muradi when he came out from the house of al-Mukhtar. 2 According to al-Mas'udi he left Mecca in the middle of Ramadan and came to Kufa on the fifth of Shawwal, and stayed in hiding with Awsaja. Twelve thousand pledged allegiance to him, and it is said eighteen thousand. 3

The people scatter

Eighteen thousand gathered to him when a herald called out, and he marched against Ibn Ziyad and besieged him in the palace. Then by evening only about a hundred remained with him, and they scattered until no one was left with him. He lodged with a freedwoman of al-Ash'ath ibn Qays, who sheltered him, and her son Muhammad ibn al-Ash'ath was told of his whereabouts. 3
