Summary

The Khuza'i who escaped the night ambush at al-Watir when his companion Munabbih was struck 1. A long apology-poem is related for him to Budayl ibn Umm Asram — and Ibn Hisham notes it is also related for Habib ibn Abdullah al-A'lam al-Hudhali 2.

His escape

Munabbih called out to him when he was struck: "go, Tamim — by God I am left for dead" — and he set off until he entered Mecca 1.

The apology poem

A long poem is related for Tamim, opening "I swear by God's House, when their homes drew far", in which he apologises to Budayl and absolves Banu Ka'b of presence at al-Watir 2. Ibn Hisham points out the poem is also mentioned for Habib ibn Abdullah al-A'lam al-Hudhali — so its attribution is not settled 3.

For young visitors

He escaped a night attack when he heard his wounded companion shout at him to run. It is said he later spoke a long poem apologising to the chiefs of his people — though some say it belongs to another poet.

Budayl ibn Warqa' al-Khuza'i

A Khuza'i leader of the truce years: he sheltered the driven-in Khuza'a in his house, led their complaint delegation to Medina, met Abu Sufyan at Usfan while concealing his own visit, and scouted the Muslim army with him at Marr al-Zahran — where he slipped away to warn the Prophet. As 'Budayl ibn Umm Asram' he answered al-Akhzar's war poem.
