Overview

Atika bint Khalid al-Khuza'iyya, Umm Ma'bad, a woman of Khuza'a whose tent lay between Mecca and Medina. She gave food to the Prophet and his companion Abu Bakr on the road of the Hijra, and milked her goat for them 1.

The goat

It was a year of drought, and her goat had been exhausted by hardship and could not keep up with the flock. The Prophet stroked her udder, named God and prayed. She spread her legs and gave milk. He milked into a vessel until it was topped with froth, gave the woman to drink, then gave his companions to drink until they were satisfied. Then he drank, and milked a second time into it until the vessel was full, and left it with her 1.

Abu Ma'bad

When her husband Abu Ma'bad came driving lean goats, he saw the milk and was amazed. He said: "Where did you get this, when the sheep are away?" She described the man to him by his features, and he said that he was the man of Quraysh whom they were seeking, and he wanted to accompany him 1 2.

Notes for researchers

  • The book places Umm Ma'bad's description at the end of the article on the Prophet's attributes, and mentions that the poetry which people in Mecca heard from the jinn, following their passage, came only after they had passed her tent 2.
For young visitors

Umm Ma'bad was a generous woman of Khuza'a who fed the Prophet and Abu Bakr on the road of the Hijra. Her thin goat gave milk at the hand of the Prophet, and when her husband came back and saw the milk, he knew that the man was blessed.
