Overview

Abu al-Hajjaj Yusuf ibn Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Ansari al-Bayyasi, one of the excellent and memorising scholars of al-Andalus. He was a man of letters, well versed in verse and prose, the days of the Arabs and their wars. He memorised the Hamasa of Abu Tammam, the two divans of Abu Tammam and al-Mutanabbi, and "Saqt al-Zand" of al-Ma'arri 2.

Travels and the Hamasa

He travelled in the lands of al-Andalus and then came to Tunis. He compiled for the amir Abu Zakariyya Yahya of the Hafsids the book "al-I'lam bi-l-Hurub al-Waqi'a fi Sadr al-Islam" (Notice of the Wars that Took Place in Early Islam). Ibn Khallikan looked at it and found his words those of one who knows the craft. He saw his book "al-Hamasa" in two volumes, which he finished in Tunis in Shawwal of the year 646 AH 3.

He was born in 573 AH and died in 653 AH 4.

His works include al-Hamasa and al-I'lam bi-l-Hurub.

حماسة أبي تمام

Abu Tammam's Hamasa — the verse anthology whose arrangement of chapters became the industry standard: al-Bayyasi memorised it and followed its ordering in his own Hamasa (646 AH), saying he found no nearer or better disposition; it stood with the Six Diwans among what the master memorisers carried.
