Overview

Abu al-Hajjaj Yusuf ibn Muhammad al-Muwaffaq, known as Ibn al-Khallal, head of the chancery in Egypt in the state of al-Hafiz al-Ubaydi and after him. Imad al-Din al-Isfahani described him as "the overseer of Egypt, the man who oversaw it, and the gatherer of its glories". He had great power in epistolary writing 2.

Al-Qadi al-Fadil

al-Qadi al-Fadil relates that when he came to the chancery of correspondence as a boy, he asked him what he had prepared for the art of writing. He answered that he had nothing but the memorising of the Qur'an and the book al-Hamasa. Ibn al-Khallal said that this was sufficient eloquence. Ibn Khallikan doubted the report, because al-Qadi al-Fadil did not enter Egypt until the days of al-Zafir 2.

Death

He lived a long time, and in the last part of his life he was harmed and kept to his house. He died in Jumada al-Akhira of the year 566 AH 3.

Al-Azhar Mosque

Al-Azhar at Cairo: founded by the Fatimids as the mosque of their da'wa, then turned by the vizier Ya'qub ibn Killis in 378 into a university teaching the sciences and letters — from a pulpit reserved for the Fatimid call into one of Egypt's foremost centres of learning beside the mosques of Amr, Ibn Tulun and al-Hakim.
