Zarqa' al-Yamama

زرقاء اليمامة

The far-sighted woman of Jadis — three nights' sight — who warned her people of trees marching and was disbelieved; Hassan's sack followed, her eyes were drawn to reveal the antimony veins of the first kohl, and she was crucified on Jaww's gate, whence the town took her name 1.

Overview

Zarqa' al-Yamama is Yamama bint Murr, sister of Rabah ibn Murr, a woman of blue eyes from Jadis. al-Mas'udi describes her as having no one on earth with keener sight: she could see a rider from a distance of three nights 1.

The army of Hassan

She warned her people of the army of Hassan when the trees began to move, and they called her a liar, so Hassan destroyed them. Then he ordered her eyes put out, and found within them black veins. She said that it was a black stone called antimony, with which she used to apply kohl. He ordered her crucified at the gate of Jaww, and so Yamama was named 1.
