Overview

Al-Mas'udi, in "The Meadows of Gold", relates the raid of Hassan, king of Himyar, on Jadis in al-Yamama. It is an account from the reports of the Arabs before Islam. 2

The ruse and the raid

Hassan set out with the Himyar, and when they were three nights' march from al-Yamama, Rabah ibn Murra ordered them to uproot a tree each and carry it before them, so that Zarqa al-Yamama would not warn the people about them. She looked out and told Jadis that the trees were moving toward them. They called her a liar and were heedless of preparing for war. Hassan attacked them at dawn from above, and plundered their people by killing, and took the women and children captive. 2

After the raid

Their king al-Aswad ibn Ghaffar fled to Tayy, and they gave him protection. The two eyes of al-Yamama were torn out and crucified at the gate of Jaw, and the town was named after it. 2

A note

The account is a tale, and it carries no date in the file: an additional source is needed.
