Maragha

مراغة

A city of Azerbaijan once called Afrahruudh; Marwan ibn Muhammad camped near it returning from the Muqan-Jilan raid, its great dung-pits gave his mules their rolling-ground — 'the maragha village', then the word village dropped — its people commended it to Marwan who bought and peopled it; seized among Umayyad estates for a daughter of al-Rashid; after al-Wajna' al-Azdi and Sadaqa ibn Ali's ravaging, Khuzayma ibn Khazim walled and garrisoned it under al-Rashid, Babak's rise made it a refuge, and al-Ma'mun's agents Ahmad ibn al-Junayd and Ali ibn Hisham repaired the wall while its suburb was fortified.

Overview

Maragha is a city in Azerbaijan that was called Afrahrudh. Marwan ibn Muhammad camped near it on his return from the expedition of Mawqan and Jilan. There was much dung in it, in which the animals rolled, so people said "come to the village of Maragha", and then dropped the word "village". 1

Its people had taken refuge with Marwan, who bought it. People grew numerous there and cultivated it. Then it was confiscated along with the estates of the Banu Umayya, and it became the property of one of the daughters of al-Rashid. 1

In the caliphate of al-Rashid, Khuzayma ibn Khazim governed Armenia and Azerbaijan. He built its wall and established it as a garrison city, and settled a dense force in it. When Babak appeared, people took refuge in it. The agents of al-Ma'mun repaired its wall, and then people settled its suburb and it was fortified. 1

Of soaring resolve and dread presence he revived the caliphate's dignity and campaigned in person till his last expedition broke near Hamadan. A calligrapher without peer among caliphs, he corrected slips in his books; al-Shashi wrote his fiqh al-Umda for him — 'Umdat al-Dunya wa'l-Din. He was killed by Batiniyya at Maragha, Thursday 16 Dhu'l-Qa'da 529.
