Overview

Ibn al-Athir reports that in 362 AH Bakhtiyar asked Adud al-Dawla for help against Subuktakin. Adud al-Dawla marched to him with the armies of Fars, and Abu al-Fath ibn al-Amid, vizier of his father Rukn al-Dawla, joined him at al-Ahwaz with the armies of al-Rayy. They marched together to Wasit. 1

The siege of Subuktakin

When Subuktakin heard of them, he marched toward Baghdad, intending to put it behind him and hold out at Diyala, but he was besieged on every side. Bakhtiyar had written to Dabba ibn Muhammad al-Asadi to revolt at al-Atharah on the outskirts of Baghdad and cut off its supplies, and he wrote similarly to the Banu Shayban. Abu Taghlib ibn Hamdan blocked supplies from the direction of Mosul. 1

Prices rose, the ruffians rose up and plundered people in Baghdad, and people held back from earning a living, fearing unrest and a lack of food. 1

The battle and the entry

Adud al-Dawla advanced and met Subuktakin and the Turks between Diyala and al-Mada'in. They fought fiercely, the Turks were routed, and a great many of them were killed. The battle took place on 14 Jumada al-Ula. The narrator says that most of them drowned, as they had crossed on bridges they had built over Diyala. 1

Adud al-Dawla camped outside Baghdad until he learned that the Turks had reached Tikrit, and then he entered it on the third of Rajab. He brought out the caliph and met him on the water. The Tigris was so full of boats, samiriyyat and zabazib, that it was said a person could cross the river from one to another on them. The caliph was lodged in the palace of the caliphate. 1

قتل بختيار بن معز الدولة

In 367 Bakhtiyar broke his oath not to march on Abu Taghlib's lands, handed his own cousin Hamdan over for prison, and joined the Hamdanid at Qasr al-Hissa by Takrit with twenty thousand men; on 18 Shawwal Adud al-Dawla routed them, refused him audience and had him killed — aged thirty-one after eleven years' rule.
