Overview
In 367 AH Adud al-Dawla defeated Bakhtiyar ibn Mu'izz al-Dawla and his ally Abu Taghlib near Tikrit. Bakhtiyar was taken captive and ordered killed. 2
Before the battle
Ibn al-Athir relates that Bakhtiyar set out from Baghdad for Syria with Hamdan ibn Nasir al-Dawla, and Hamdan advised him to head for Mosul. Adud al-Dawla had made him swear not to go against the rule of Abu Taghlib, and he broke the oath. He seized Hamdan and handed him to the agents of Abu Taghlib to imprison him. 2
The battle and the killing
The two armies met on the eighteenth of Shawwal at the Palace of the Pebbles near Tikrit. The two were defeated, and Bakhtiyar was captured. Adud al-Dawla did not allow him to be brought into his presence, and ordered him killed on the advice of Abu al-Naja Tahir ibn Ibrahim. Bakhtiyar was thirty-one years old, and his rule lasted eleven years. 2
The Gregorian date of the battle is derived from the Hijri date and is not stated in the source.
