ملحمة أصبهان سنة 624هـ
ملحمة أصبهان سنة 624هـ
c. 1227 CE · 624 AH
In 624 Jalal al-Din marched from Tabriz to relieve Isfahan; at the clash his brother Ghiyath al-Din deserted him, yet his right shattered the Tatar left and his left crushed their right — the people cheered victory — then the Tatars returned with their ambush in one flood-charge as night came on, the amirs fell, Jalal al-Din was ringed with a handful and fled on a war-mare taking a spear-thrust. A battle the like of which was unheard of, both hosts routed, in Ramadan 1.

Overview
In 624 AH the sultan Jalal al-Din, who was at Tabriz, learned that the Tatars had marched on Isfahan, where his family was. He set out for it and prepared to meet them. 1
The battle
Ibn al-Imad relates that the brother of the sultan Ghiyath al-Din abandoned him and turned away, and Jahan Pahlawan followed him. Then the right wing of Jalal al-Din broke the left wing of the Tatars, and his left wing charged their right. People rejoiced at the victory. 1
Then the Tatars charged once more with their ambush. Night had come, the emirs were killed and the fighting grew fierce. Jalal al-Din held firm with a small group, then was routed, was wounded by a spear, and his army was scattered. The source describes it as an epic battle unheard of in the rout of both sides, and it took place in Ramadan. 1
