Overview
In Shawwal 315 AH Abu Tahir al-Qarmati defeated the caliph's army under Yusuf ibn Abi al-Saj near Kufa and took him captive. The Qarmatians then seized al-Anbar. 2
The meeting at Kufa
Yusuf marched from Wasit to Kufa and reached it on Friday, the eighth of Shawwal, a day after Abu Tahir had arrived. Ibn al-Athir says that he despised their small number, and gave orders to write the letter of victory and good news before the meeting. They fought on Saturday from the day until sunset. Then Abu Tahir himself took up the fighting, defeated them, and took Yusuf captive at the time of the sunset prayer. 2
al-Anbar
The people of Baghdad feared and considered fleeing to Hulwan and Hamadhan. al-Muqtadir sent five hundred men of Samarra with fighters to stop them crossing the Euphrates. The Qarmatians made for al-Anbar, and its people cut the bridge, so Abu Tahir moved his companions to al-Huwaytha. Three hundred men of them crossed in boats, defeated the caliph's army, seized al-Anbar and built its bridge. 2
