Overview

Yusuf ibn Abi al-Saj, an Abbasid commander. al-Muqtadir sent him from Wasit to Kufa at the end of Ramadan of the year 315 AH to meet Abu Tahir al-Qarmati. He called the Qaramita to obedience, and they said: "There is no obedience but to God." When he saw how few they were, he disdained them, and ordered the letter announcing the victory to be written before the encounter 2.

The battle

They fought from the first part of Saturday until sunset. Then Abu Tahir himself took up the fight, and the companions of Yusuf were defeated, and he was taken captive at the time of sunset 2.

Ibn al-Jawzi reports that in the year 271 AH, when he was governor of Mecca, he attacked a slave-boy of the Ta'i called Badr, who was taken captive and conveyed to Baghdad 3.

Abu Sa'id's son; in 317 he massacred the pilgrims in the Haram, cast the dead into Zamzam, broke and wrenched out the Black Stone — kept over twenty years — and cried from the Ka'ba's door 'I create mankind and destroy them'. He prospered no more, dying torn by smallpox.
