سقوط دمياط بيد الفرنج سنة 647هـ
c. June 1249 CE · c. Rabi' II 647 AH
In Rabi' I 647 the Franks invested Damietta by land and sea — the garrison panicked and the city fell without a blow; the dying sultan al-Salih Najm al-Din hanged sixty of its notables, his death was concealed while his mamluk Aqtay raced to fetch Turanshah from Hisn Kayfa, and in Dhu l-Qa'da the Franks reached the sultan's vestibule at Mansura, killed Fakhr al-Din, routed the Muslims — then the Muslims rallied and slaughtered them 1.

Overview
The "Fragments of Gold" reports that the Franks besieged Damietta by land and sea in Rabi al-Awwal 647 AH, and took it without a blow or a thrust. 2
The sultan
Sultan al-Salih Najm al-Din Ayyub was at al-Mansura. He grew angry at the people of Damietta, and hanged sixty of its notables. Then he died on the night of the middle of Sha'ban, and his death was concealed for days. He sent his client Aqtay to the fortress of Kayfa, and brought forward his son Turan Shah. 2
The battle of al-Mansura
The battle took place in Dhu al-Qa'da. The Franks charged until they reached the sultan's vestibule, and the commander of the army, Fakhr al-Din ibn al-Shaykh, fought until he was killed. The Muslims were routed, then came back at the Franks, and a great number of them were killed. 2
