Summary
In 160 AH, corresponding to 777 CE, Sulayman ibn Yaqzan al-Arabi, governor of Barcelona and Girona, contacted Charlemagne at Paderborn. 2
The plan
This was arranged in understanding with Husayn ibn Yahya al-Ansari, governor of Zaragoza, and Abd al-Rahman ibn Habib al-Fihri, and with the encouragement of the caliph al-Mahdi. The plan was for Charlemagne to cross the Pyrenees to Zaragoza, which al-Arabi would hand over to him, while al-Fihri advanced from the Maghrib and camped at Murcia. Abd al-Rahman al-Dakhil would thus be encircled, and the country would declare its submission to Abbasid rule. 2
The failure
Abd al-Rahman al-Dakhil surprised al-Fihri and destroyed him, and al-Ansari closed the gates of Zaragoza against the Carolingians. When Charlemagne learned that the Saxons had risen in revolt in Germany, he returned in 162 AH, corresponding to 779 CE. The invasion failed, just as the Abbasids had failed to recover al-Andalus. 2
