Summary

On the Day of Sacrifice of the year 9 AH pilgrimage, Ali ibn Abi Talib proclaimed at the Jamra the opening of Sura Bara'a: the repudiation of pacts, a four-month respite, and the end of polytheist pilgrimage and naked circumambulation 1.

The account

The Prophet sent Abu Bakr as leader of the year 9 AH pilgrimage to establish the rites for the Muslims; then the opening of Sura Bara'a came down repudiating the pacts, so he sent Ali to proclaim it on his behalf — in keeping with the Arabs' custom that pacts of blood and property be announced by the principal or his kin 2. Ali met him at al-Arj or Dajnan; Abu Bakr asked: "commander or commanded?" He said: commanded — and they went on, and Abu Bakr held the pilgrimage for the people 1. Ali stood at the Jamra on the Day of Sacrifice and proclaimed what the Prophet had commanded: every pact-holder was given his pact's repudiation, those with no pact were granted four months, and the pact of whoever had not shorted the Muslims remained to its term 3. Abu Bakr sent men calling out: after this year no polytheist shall make pilgrimage and none shall circumambulate the House naked 3. Al-Mubarakpuri describes this proclamation as effectively announcing the end of idolatry in the Arabian peninsula 1.

For young visitors

In the pilgrimage season of year nine after the hijra, Ali ibn Abi Talib announced at the Prophet's command that the time of idol-worship in the Arabian peninsula had ended, and that whoever held a pact would have it honoured to its term.
