Sacred space and pilgrimage

Overview

Sufa is the name of the Banu al-Ghawth ibn Murra, branches of Ilyas ibn Mudar. In the rule of Khuza'a over Mecca, they held the right of releasing the people from Arafat to Muzdalifa and of letting them depart on the day of departure from Mina. 1 2

The privilege

The meaning of this privilege is that people did not throw the stones on the day of departure until a man of Sufa had thrown his. Then, when people had finished throwing and wished to leave Mina, Sufa took up the two sides of the pass, and no one passed until they had gone by, and then they let the people go. 1 2 When Sufa died out, the privilege was inherited by Banu Sa'd ibn Zayd Manat of Tamim. 1

The day of Qusayy

When Hulayl died and Sufa did what it used to do, Qusayy came to them at the pass with those with him from Quraysh and Kinana, and said: "We have a better right to this than you." They fought him, and Qusayy overcame them and took what was in their hands. 3 4 See the seizure of Mecca by Qusayy and the offices of Quraysh.

For young visitors

Sufa was a family that gave the pilgrims the signal to begin throwing the stones and to leave Mina, before Qusayy took that role from them.
