Overview

A stage of Ibn Jubayr's pilgrimage: from Aydhab to Jeddah across the Red Sea, after a long stay at Aydhab and a hard desert road, which he describes before arriving 1.

The route

The pilgrims boarded the jalba for the crossing to Jeddah on Monday in Rabi' al-Awwal. They stayed at the anchorage because the wind had dropped, then set sail on Tuesday morning. The stay at Aydhab lasted about twenty-three days, during which he complained of hardship, bad water and bad air 2.

On the road

The book describes the desert road that pilgrims coming from the Nile take on camels, with guides from the Beja, and the many who died of thirst on it 3.

Notes on pagination

The page numbers follow the scanned file of the edition (1907), not the printed page numbers. No Gregorian date is given at this stage, because the text names the Hijri month and day without the year in this passage.
