Overview

The route of the Farewell Pilgrimage: from Medina to Dhu al-Hulayfa, then Dhu Tuwa and Mecca in the 10th year AH, then the sacred sites around Mecca, and then the return to Medina. The book describes the stations in their order, and does not name the stations of the return road 1.

Departure and ihram

The Prophet set out on Saturday after noon, having prepared for departure with ghusl and perfume, wearing the izar and rida', and garlanding the offering animals. He reached Dhu al-Hulayfa before the afternoon prayer, prayed two rak'as and spent the night there. He then entered ihram for both the Hajj and the Umra together, performing qiran with the offering 2.

To Mecca

He continued the march and spent the night at Dhu Tuwa near Mecca. Then he washed, prayed the dawn prayer, and entered Mecca on Sunday morning, when four nights of Dhu al-Hijja of the year 10 AH had passed 3 4. He circled the House and performed the sa'y between al-Safa and al-Marwa. He did not leave ihram, because he had brought the offering, and he settled at the upper part of Mecca, near al-Hajun.

The sacred sites

On the Day of Tarwiya he set out for Mina, then went to Arafat, where he stopped at Namira, where a tent was pitched for him. He gave a sermon after the zenith in the bottom of the valley, and stood at Arafat until sunset. He then moved on to Muzdalifa, where he combined the sunset and night prayers, and stood at al-Mash'ar al-Haram until dawn. He passed through Batn Muhassir to Mina, where he threw seven pebbles at the Jamrat al-Aqaba and sacrificed sixty-three camels with his own hand, and Ali completed the hundred 5.

He then went down to the House and prayed noon in Mecca. He stayed at Mina during the days of Tashriq, and on the thirteenth he left for the Khayf of Banu Kinana in al-Abtah, and performed the farewell circumambulation 6.

Return

He then urged his mounts toward Medina. The book does not name the stations on this road 7.

Note on the stations

Mina, Namira, Arafat, Muzdalifa, Batn Muhassir and the Khayf of Banu Kinana are sites the book mentions. No place file has yet been made for them in the data, so they are named in the sections above by their Arabic names.

The complaint of Ali's troops after Yemen and the Prophet's words: do not complain of Ali

When Ali came up from Yemen to meet the Prophet at Mecca for the Farewell Pilgrimage he hurried ahead, leaving a companion over his troops who clothed every man in a robe from the Yemeni cloth Ali carried; when Ali met the army and saw the robes he ordered them stripped before reaching the Prophet, and the troops voiced their grievance. The Prophet stood and said: people, do not complain of Ali, for by God he is too rough in God's cause to be complained of. Ibn Ishaq gives two reports, from Yazid ibn Talha ibn Rukana and from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri.
