Overview

Ibn Battuta's route from Mecca to Iraq after his pilgrimage, by way of Medina, with the Iraqi caravan, as he recounts it in his journey 1.

The route

He left Mecca on the twentieth of Dhu al-Hijja after the farewell circumambulation, by way of Batn Marr, then 'Asfan, Khulays and the valley of al-Samak, and camped at Badr 2.

From Badr to al-Safra, then three days to Medina, where he stayed six days 3.

From Medina to the valley of al-Maruws and then the land of Najd, with the fortress of Fayd among the stations, then al-Tha'laba and the pool of al-Marjum, then Zumala, the Pass of the Devil and Waqisa, then the minaret of al-Qurun and al-Udhayb, until al-Qadisiyya 4.

After al-Qadisiyya he alighted at the shrine of Ali at al-Najaf. He noted that Kufa and Baghdad lay ahead on the road, but did not say that he entered them at this point 5.
