Summary

The chief of Thaqif who led their six-man delegation to Medina in Ramadan of year 9 AH and negotiated the treaty's terms 1.

His account

Thaqif tasked Abd Yalil ibn Amr with going as an envoy to the Prophet; he refused, fearing he would be dealt with on his return as Urwa ibn Mas'ud had been — shot with arrows until killed 1. So he stipulated they send men with him; they sent two men of the confederates and three of Banu Malik, making six 1. The delegation's head asked the Prophet to write them a treaty permitting them fornication, wine and usury, the survival of al-Lat and exemption from prayer — he refused. They took counsel, found no escape from submission, and became Muslim 1. The delegation then hid the truth from their people for days for fear of war, until they revealed it and Thaqif became Muslim 2.

For young visitors

Thaqif's chief feared being killed as Urwa had been before him, so he took men with him and travelled to the Prophet; he became Muslim and returned, and his tribe became Muslim.
