Abu Tashfin Abd al-Rahman ibn Musa ibn Abi Hammu, sultan of Tlemcen; raised among M'aluji companions who, inflamed by his father's slights beside the favoured cousin Mas'ud ibn Abi Amir, pushed him to seize the rule — they rushed the palace at siesta, killed the sultan, Mas'ud and Abu Sarhan and massacred the Banu al-Mallah viziers while the town-crier proclaimed Abu Tashfin avenging his father; then he took the kingdom and marched on the rebel Muhammad ibn Yusuf, waging the long Béjaïa-Tlemcen wars against the Almohad remnant.

وصوله إلى الحكم

يروي ابن خلدون أن أباه دفع إليه رفاقاً من المعلوجي يخدمونه في تربيته، وكان أبوه يعاتبه ويقارنه بابن عمه مسعود بن أبي عامر. فحثّه رفاقه على الاستيلاء على الأمر، فهجموا وقت القيلولة على خاصة القصر، وقتلوا السلطان ومسعوداً وأبا سرحان، وهلك الوزراء بنو الملاح. ونادى منادٍ في تلمسان أن أبا تاشفين ثأر لأبيه. 1

بعد ذلك

انفرد أبو تاشفين بالأمر بعد أبيه (أبو حمو موسى)، ثم سار إلى محمد بن يوسف الذي خرج على أبيه حين رجع من حصار بجاية. ودامت حروبه مع الموحدين في الفتنة الطويلة على بجاية وتلمسان. 1

Abu Ziyan Muhammad ibn Uthman

Abu Ziyan Muhammad ibn Uthman ibn Yaghmurasan, third of the Abd al-Wadid kings; he took the rule when his father died of dysentery in the fifth year of Yusuf ibn Ya'qub's siege of Tlemcen in 703 — his brother Abu Hammu Musa answering the troops that their sultan was the elder brother Abu Ziyan — and the city endured to a full eight years and three months, eating carrion, cats, mice and the dead, tearing roofs for fuel, a measure of wheat at two and a half mithqals of gold and a cat at one and a half, until Yusuf ibn Ya'qub was stabbed by a eunuch slave and torn limb from limb — 'and God lifted the affliction from the house of Ziyan as if they had been raised from the graves', their mint striking 'how near is God's relief' in wonder at it.
