Uthman ibn Yaghmurasan ibn Zayyan

عثمان بن يغمراسن بن زيان

Uthman ibn Yaghmurasan ibn Zayyan, second of the Banu Abd al-Wad kings; when his father died at the end of Dhu'l-Qa'da 682 returning from Ténès, he met the bier at Sik, concealed the death to Tlemcen and took the bay'a of elite and commons, writing to the Hafsid al-Mustansir's line for investiture — his father's counsel, per Ibn Khaldun's shaykh al-Ayili quoting Abu Hammu Musa, being never to trust meeting the Marinids in open field but to lean on the walls; he held Tlemcen against Yusuf ibn Ya'qub's 698 siege with Abu Zakariya's aid, the Almohad column broken at Jabal al-Zab in the battle of Marsa al-Ru'us, and erased the Hafsid name from Tlemcen's minbars.

Overview

Uthman ibn Yaghmurasan ibn Zayyan, the second king of the Banu Abd al-Wad, who succeeded his father Yaghmurasan ibn Zayyan over Tlemcen 1.

Accession

Ibn Khaldun reports that his father died at the end of Dhu al-Qa'da in the year 682 AH, while returning from Tenes. Uthman met him at Sik, and carried him to Tlemcen without announcing his death. The common people and the notables pledged allegiance to him, and he wrote to the Hafsid caliph in Tunis, who confirmed him in his office 1.

War with the Banu Marin

Ibn Khaldun transmits from his teacher al-Ayyili, from Sultan Abu Hammu Musa, that his father had instructed him not to meet the Banu Marin in the open, and to take refuge behind the walls. Yusuf ibn Ya'qub besieged Tlemcen in the year 698 AH. The amir Abu Zakariyya sent him his armies, and the defeat was inflicted on the army of the Almohads at the Mountain of al-Zab, in the battle of Marsa al-Ru'us. Uthman erased the name of the Hafsid caliph from the pulpits of Tlemcen 2.

The book reports that his kingdom extended between Tlemcen and Bejaia. The available source gives pages 1854 to 1856 only; his year of death needs an additional source.

Abu Hammu I Musa ibn Uthman

Abu Hammu Musa ibn Uthman ibn Yaghmurasan, sultan of Tlemcen; he singled out his cousin Mas'ud ibn Abi Amir for his privy councils while heaping scorn on his son Abd al-Rahman Abu Tashfin, comparing him unfavourably to that cousin — until the son's M'aluji companions, stoking his envy, rushed the palace at the siesta hour as the council broke up, cut the sultan down with their swords, killed Mas'ud and Abu Sarhan, and massacred the Banu al-Mallah viziers, the Cordoban house of the hijaba — the town-crier going through Tlemcen's streets that Abu Sarhan had betrayed the sultan and his son Abu Tashfin had risen for him.
