The Abd al-Wadid kingdom of Zanata at Tlemcen, founded by Yaghmurasen ibn Zayyan who took the city after an eight-year siege — who answered, when an Idrisid pedigree was offered him, in their tongue: 'if true it profits us with God, but this world we won with our swords'; they held the central Maghreb between the Marinids and the Hafsids until the Marinids entered Tlemcen and ended their state.

Overview

The Banu Abd al-Wad state of the Zanata in Tlemcen, founded by Yaghmurasan ibn Zayyan after he took the city. They ruled the central Maghrib between the Banu Marin and the Hafsids, until the Marinids entered Tlemcen and their state ended. 1

Founding

Yaghmurasan besieged Tlemcen for eight years and then took it. The data put this in 635 AH (1236 CE), a derived year. 1

Ibn Khaldun reports that a claim of descent from Idris was brought to Yaghmurasan, and he said in their tongue something to the effect that if it was true it would benefit us before God, but that as for this world, we obtained it by our swords. 1

The end

The Banu Marin overcame Tlemcen and the king of the Banu Abd al-Wad was defeated. The data put this in 737 AH (1337 CE). The year is derived and disputed, and the matter needs a second source. 1

Abu Hammu I Musa ibn Uthman

Abu Hammu Musa ibn Uthman ibn Yaghmurasan, sultan of Tlemcen; he singled out his cousin Mas'ud ibn Abi Amir for his privy councils while heaping scorn on his son Abd al-Rahman Abu Tashfin, comparing him unfavourably to that cousin — until the son's M'aluji companions, stoking his envy, rushed the palace at the siesta hour as the council broke up, cut the sultan down with their swords, killed Mas'ud and Abu Sarhan, and massacred the Banu al-Mallah viziers, the Cordoban house of the hijaba — the town-crier going through Tlemcen's streets that Abu Sarhan had betrayed the sultan and his son Abu Tashfin had risen for him.
