Summary

Abu Tha'laba al-Khushani — "a famous Companion known by his kunya, whose name is much disputed", as Ibn Hajar says: some said Jurhum (as Ahmad, Muslim, Ibn Zanjawayh and Ibn Sa'd said), others Jurthum, Jarhum, Jartum or Jurthuma, others Zayd or Umar, with yet other reports — and his father's name is disputed likewise 1.

His lineage

He is ascribed to Banu Khushayn; his name Wa'il ibn al-Namir ibn Wabara ibn Taghlib ibn Halwan ibn Imran ibn al-Haf ibn Quda'a; Ibn al-Kalbi said he was of the children of Laywan ibn Murr ibn Khushayn 2.

His question about food and game

In the two Sahihs, through Rabi'a ibn Yazid: he said, "Messenger of God, we are in a land of People of the Book whose vessels we eat from, and a land of game where I hunt with my bow, my trained dog and my untrained dog — tell me what of that is lawful for us" 2.

His Islam

Ibn al-Barqi, following Ibn al-Kalbi, said he was among those who pledged under the Tree; the Prophet allotted him a share at Khaybar and sent him to his people, who became Muslim 2. Ibn Sa'd records from Muhjan ibn Wahb: Abu Tha'laba came to the Prophet as he prepared for Khaybar, became Muslim, went out with him and witnessed it; seven men of his people later came, became Muslim and stayed with him 2.

His transmitters

He settled in Syria — it is said, Homs; from him relate Abu Idris al-Khawlani, Abu Umayya al-Sha'bani, Abu Asma' al-Rahabi, Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab, Jubayr ibn Nufayr, Abu Qilaba, Makhul and others, some of whom did not meet him 2.
