Summary

Khansa' bint Khidham ibn Khalid al-Ansariyya of Banu Amr ibn Awf; her hadith is established in the Muwatta: her father married her off against her will, so she came to the Messenger of God and he annulled her marriage 1.

Her state at the marriage

Ibn Hajar notes disagreement in the chain: Malik related it from Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Qasim from his father from Abd al-Rahman and Mujamma', sons of Zayd ibn Haritha — and al-Thawri diverged in chain and text, saying: from Abdullah ibn Yazid ibn Wadi'a from Khansa', that she was a virgin then, as Ibn Abd al-Barr states; Ibn Manda said Ibn Uyayna related it agreeing with Malik, and Yahya ibn Sa'id related it both mursal and connected 1.

Ibn Ishaq's account

Through Ibn Ishaq from Hajjaj ibn al-Sa'ib from his father from his grandmother Khansa': she had been widowed of a man, her father married her to a man of Banu Amr ibn Awf, and Abu Lubaba ibn Abd al-Mundhir then sought her; their affair rose to the Messenger of God, who bade her father let her follow her heart — she married Abu Lubaba and is the mother of his son al-Sa'ib. Ahmad recorded it 2.

Other accounts

Ibn Manda recorded from Abu Hurayra that Khansa' bint Khidham's father married her to a man while she was mistress of her own affair; she disliked it, came to the Prophet and he said: "your affair is in your hand" — Abu Lubaba then sought her and she bore him al-Sa'ib 2. Ibn Sa'd recorded from Nafi' ibn Jubayr: "Khansa' bint Khidham was widowed of her husband; her father married her off and she came to the Prophet saying: Messenger of God, my father outdid me, marrying me without telling me — he said: there is no marriage for him; marry whom you wish — so she married Abu Lubaba" 2.

Note

In some chains her name appears as "Khunas" (with a damma, lightened) 2.
