Overview

Dubays ibn Sadaqa ibn Mansur al-Mazyadi, a Mazyadid prince, whose story is recorded in Ibn Khaldun's "Al-Ibar". 1

His life

He was taken prisoner on the day his father Sadaqa was killed in 501 AH. Sultan Muhammad freed him for the sake of his mother and made him swear obedience. Sultan Mahmud then sent him back to his land, where he ruled al-Hilla, and a host of Arabs and Kurds gathered around him. 1

He then rebelled against the caliph al-Mustarshid. The caliph gathered armies against him, his forces were routed, and his womenfolk were taken captive in 517 AH. 1

He joined the Franks and encouraged them to attack Aleppo in 518 AH, but it held out against them. He then joined King Tughril ibn Sultan Muhammad and urged him to march on Iraq, promising him its rule. 1

He was of the Banu Mazyad.

Sadaqa ibn Mansur al-Mazyadidi, King of the Arabs

Sadaqa ibn Mansur ibn Dubays ibn Ali ibn Mazyad al-Asadi, amir of Banu Mazyad and builder of al-Hilla in Iraq; among the strongest backers of Sultan Muhammad ibn Malikshah against Barkyaruq, who enfeoffed him Wasit and licensed him over Basra — but he sheltered Sarkhab ibn Kaykhusraw and the sultan contested the realm with him; meeting him at the end of Rajab 501 AH with Ubada and Khafaja deserting him, he charged the Turks crying 'I am the king of the Arabs, I am Sadaqa', an arrow pinned him and a Turkish ghulam named Barghash killed him and bore his head to the sultan — in the twenty-first year of his emirate; generous, forbearing, truthful and just, he could read but not write and kept a library of finely copied books.
