Summary

Al-Hubab ibn al-Mundhir ibn al-Jamuh al-Khazraji, a Companion of the Ansar, author of the counsel about the water on the day of Badr 1.

The water counsel

The night before the battle he asked the Prophet: is this a place God sent you down to, which we may neither pass nor fall short of — or is it opinion and war and stratagem? When the Prophet said it was opinion and war and stratagem, he counselled settling the army on the water nearest the enemy, sealing the wells beyond it, and building a cistern to drink from while none drinks below it 1.

The Prophet took his counsel; the Muslims camped on the water and cut it off from Quraysh, who had camped at the far side of the valley behind the dune 1.
