Overview
Kathir ibn Shihab ibn al-Husayn ibn Dhi al-Ghussa al-Harithi, a fighter in Sa'd's army, and later a governor in the Umayyad period. 1
At al-Qadisiyya
According to al-Baladhuri, after crossing the Sarat he charged at the Galenus (al-Jalinus) and stabbed him, and it is said that he killed him. Ibn al-Kalbi said that Zuhra ibn Hawiya was the one who killed him. 1
His governorships
Mu'awiya appointed him over al-Rayy and Dastaba for a time, on the recommendation of his agents Ziyad and al-Mughira. Then he became angry with him and imprisoned him in Damascus. Yazid ibn Mu'awiya later wrote to Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad to appoint him over Masabadhan, Mihrajanqadhaf and Hulwan and al-Mahin, and granted him estates in the mountains, where he built his palace known as the Palace of Kathir. 1
Views about him
The text says that he was an Uthmani who reviled Ali and discouraged people from supporting al-Husayn, and that al-Mukhtar composed rhymed prose denouncing him. It says that he died shortly before al-Mukhtar's rising or at its beginning. These are the descriptions of the source, and they need an additional source. 1
