Prithviraj, king of Hind
ملك الهند صاحب أجمير (برتفي راج)
588 AH
The king of Hind at Ajmer — identified in modern histories as Prithviraj Chauhan — who had routed Shihab al-Din in 583 and fell into his trap in 588: taken standing on his elephant at dawn, he answered the famous question ('had you taken me?') with 'I had a golden fetter for you', heard 'we give you no rank worth a fetter', and was killed as Ajmer passed to Aybak 1.

Overview
King of India, lord of Ajmer. Modern sources know him as Prithviraj Chauhan. According to Ibn al-Athir, he defeated Shihab al-Din al-Ghuri in 583 AH. 2
The capture
Ibn al-Athir reports that Shihab al-Din returned in 588 AH, and the king pursued him for four stages, until the Muslims surrounded him at night without his knowing it. When dawn came they attacked him from every side, and he stood on his elephant until he was captured. 2
It is related that Shihab al-Din asked him what he would have done had he captured him, and he said that he had prepared a golden shackle. Ajmer was then taken and granted as an iqta to Qutb al-Din Aybak, and the king of India was killed in 588 AH. 3
