Summary

Umm Hakim bint al-Harith ibn Hisham ibn al-Mughira al-Makhzumiyya, wife of Ikrima ibn Abi Jahl 1.

Her Islam and her seeking safety for her husband

Abu Umar said: she was present on the day of Uhud as an unbeliever, then became Muslim at the conquest. Her husband had fled to Yemen, so she went after him with the Prophet's leave, attended with her and became Muslim 1. In Ibn Manda's account from Urwa: Umm Hakim bint al-Harith was with Ikrima, and Fakhita bint al-Walid ibn al-Mughira was with Safwan ibn Umayya — both became Muslim, and Umm Hakim asked safety for Ikrima and the Prophet granted it 1. Musa ibn Uqba mentions from al-Zuhri that she became Muslim on the conquest day, asked the Prophet's leave to seek her husband, and he granted it and gave him safety 1.

Marj al-Saffar

She went out with her husband to the Byzantines' campaign and he was martyred; Khalid ibn Sa'id ibn al-As married her. On the eve of the battle of Marj al-Saffar he wished to consummate the marriage; she said: "if only you would wait until God routs these hosts" — he said: "my soul tells me I shall be killed" — she said: "then go ahead". He celebrated the wedding at al-Qantara — she became known for it, and it was called "Umm Hakim's bridge" 1. In the morning he held the wedding feast; they had not finished eating when the Byzantines came on them. Fighting broke out, Khalid was martyred, and Umm Hakim wrapped her garments and fought — killing seven of the Byzantines with the tent-post of the tent in which Khalid had wed her 1.
