Summary

Umm Kulthum bint Ali ibn Abi Talib al-Hashimiyya; her mother Fatima bint the Prophet. She was born in the Prophet's time — Abu Umar said: before the Prophet's death 1.

Umar's marriage to her

Ibn Hajar mentions, from Ibn Abi Umar al-Maqdisi from Sufyan from Amr from Muhammad ibn Ali, that Umar asked Ali for his daughter Umm Kulthum's hand; Ali mentioned her youth, and it was said to him "he turned you away — go back to him" — so Ali said: "I will send her to you; if you are pleased, she is your wife", and sent her to him 1. Ibn Wahb said, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam from his father from his grandfather: Umar married Umm Kulthum on a dower of forty thousand 1. In Ibn Sa'd's account from Ja'far ibn Muhammad from his father: Umar asked Ali for her, and Ali said "I have held my daughters for Ja'far's sons" — Umar said: "marry her to me" 2.

Her children

Al-Zubayr said: she bore Umar his two children Zayd and Ruqayya; Umm Kulthum and her son died on one day — Zayd had been struck in a fight between Banu Adi: he had gone out to make peace between them and a man wounded him in the darkness, not knowing him; he lived some days, and his mother was ill, so they died on one day 1.

After Umar

Ibn Hajar mentions, from Abu Bishr al-Dawlabi in al-Dhuriyya al-Tahira from al-Hasan ibn al-Hasan ibn Ali, that when Umm Kulthum was widowed from Umar her brothers al-Hasan and al-Husayn entered on her offering her a matter; Ali told her God had put her affair in her hand, and if she wished he would put it in his. She said: "father, I am a woman who wants what women want, and I love to have something of this world" — he said: "this is the work of these two" — and swore not to speak to either of them until she complied. They attended to her affair and asked her, and she complied, and Awf ibn Ja'far ibn Abi Talib married her 1. Al-Daraqutni mentions in al-Ikhwa that Awf died leaving her, his brother Muhammad married her, then died, and his brother Abdullah ibn Ja'far married her and she died in his keeping 2. Ibn Sa'd mentions the like, saying she used to say: "I am shy before Asma' bint Umays — her two sons died while married to me, and I fear for the third"; she died with him, having borne children to none of them 2.

Abu Sufyan's mission to Medina

Frightened by what had been done at al-Watir, Quraysh sent Abu Sufyan ibn Harb to Medina to stiffen the pact and extend its term. The Prophet gave him no answer; Abu Bakr and Umar declined to intercede; Ali advised him to grant protection himself, which he did and returned home empty-handed.
