Umm Kulthum bint Muhammad

Umm Kulthum bint the Prophet; Uthman married her after her sister Ruqayya's death in his keeping ¹.

Abu Umar mentions that Utba ibn Abi Lahab married her before the mission and did not consummate it; when the Prophet was sent, his father ordered him to leave her, and Uthman then married her after Ruqayya's death in year 3 AH ¹. Ibn Sa'd relates that it was in Rabi' al-Awwal of year 3 AH ². Ibn Manda relates, in an unusual chain, a hadith that the Prophet married Uthman to Umm Kulthum only by revelation from heaven — he says: "unusual, known only by this chain" ².

• The timing of the divorces by Abu Lahab's two sons: Ibn Hajar transmits a saying that Utba and Utayba divorced Ruqayya and Umm Kulthum before consummation when Surat al-Masad came down — preferring it over what Abu Umar said, following Ibn Sa'd, that the marriage was before the mission, since Zaynab, the eldest daughter, was born ten years before the mission ².

She died with Uthman in Sha'ban of year 9 AH, having borne him no children ². Ibn Hajar mentions from Anas that he saw the Prophet at her grave with eyes brimming; he asked: "is there among you one who did not approach his wife tonight?" Abu Talha said: I — he said: "go down into her grave" ². Al-Waqidi said: Ali, al-Fadl and Usama ibn Zayd went down into her grave ².

Ibn Hajar also brings that Asma' bint Umays said she washed Umm Kulthum and Safiyya bint Abd al-Muttalib; in another account Umm Atiyya was among those who washed her ².
