Overview

Valencia is a city in eastern al-Andalus on the sea. Al-Maqqari mentions that its affair passed to the jurist and judge Abu Ahmad ibn Juhhaf. Then Ruderic al-Qanbiyatur seized it in the year 488 AH, or it is said the year before, after a siege of twenty months, and he burned it. 2

After the siege

Among those burned in it was the man of letters Abu Ja'far ibn al-Buni. Then the commander Abu Muhammad Mazdali conquered it in the year 495 AH, as an envoy of Yusuf ibn Tashfin. After that the Banu Ghaniya and Ibn Mardanish governed it. 2

In his mention of it, al-Maqqari gives a verse by Ibn Khafaja as a witness, in lament for the city. 3

ردريق القنبيطور

Rodrigo, called al-Qanbitur (el Campeador) and 'the tyrant' in the Muslim sources; raised by Yusuf ibn Hud of Zaragoza to take Valencia, he entered it in 488 after a twenty-month siege, burned the qadi Ibn Jahhaf alive over the hidden treasury, and destroyed the city until the Almoravid Mazdali retook it in 495.
