Amr ibn Ma'dikarib comes with men of Banu Zubayd

قدوم عمرو بن معدي كرب في أناس من بني زبيد

c. 631 CE · c. 9 AH

Medina

Amr ibn Ma'dikarib came to the Prophet ﷺ with men of Banu Zubayd and embraced Islam, believing in him. He had earlier urged Qays ibn Makshuh al-Muradi, chief of his people, to go together and find out about the Qurashi who claimed prophethood; Qays refused and belittled the idea, so Amr rode alone. Qays then threatened him and Amr lampooned him. Amr stayed among his people under Farwa ibn Musayk, and when the Prophet died he apostatised.

Overview

Amr ibn Ma'dikarib came to the Prophet among people of Banu Zubayd, and became Muslim. 1

Before the coming

When news of the Prophet's affair reached them, Amr said to Qays ibn Makshuh al-Muradi: "You are the chief of your people, and it has been mentioned to us that a man of Quraysh called Muhammad has come out in the Hijaz saying that he is a prophet. Come with us to him, so that we know his teaching. If he is a prophet, you will not be left in the dark about it, and we will follow him; if he is other than that, we will know his knowledge." Qays refused and made light of his opinion. 1 Amr rode until he came to the Prophet, and became Muslim, confirmed him and believed in him. 1

His satire of Qays

When that reached Qays ibn Makshuh, he threatened Amr and grew hard on him and said: "You opposed me and abandoned my opinion." Amr said about this a poem in which he reminded him that on the day of Dhu Sana' he had given him a command whose rightness was clear, and of fear of God. 1 2

What followed

Amr remained among his people, Banu Zubayd, whose chief was Farwa ibn Musayk. When the Prophet died he apostatised; see the apostasy of Amr ibn Ma'dikarib. 2

Markers of the report

  • Ibn Hajar mentions a view that he did not meet the Prophet, but came after his death. 1 3

Amr ibn Ma'dikarib

The famous poet and horseman of Zubayd; in Ibn Ishaq's account he came to the Prophet with the delegation of Zubayd and embraced Islam, he left Islam after the Prophet's death, was captured and returned to it, and fought well at al-Qadisiyya; whether he met the Prophet is disputed.
