Medina

Farwa ibn Musayk al-Muradi (may God be pleased with him) came to the Prophet ﷺ, breaking with the kings of Kinda, reciting two verses on the way about seeking Muhammad's favours; the Prophet asked whether what befell his people on the Day of al-Radm grieved him and said it had only increased them in Islam's good. He set him over Murad, Zubayd and all Madhhij and sent Khalid ibn Sa'id ibn al-As with him over the sadaqa, who stayed in his land until the Prophet died.

Overview

Farwa ibn Musayk al-Muradi came to the Prophet, separating himself from and turning away from the kings of Kinda, and he became Muslim. The Prophet appointed him over all of Murad, Zubayd and Madhhij. 1 2

The report

Before the account, Ibn Ishaq mentions the day of al-Radm between Murad and Hamdan, and Farwa's poetry about it. 1 When Farwa came to the Prophet he said two verses: when the kings of Kinda turned away, like a man whose sinew has been torn by the pulling of its women, he drew his mount toward Muhammad, hoping for his bounties and the goodness of his hospitality. Ibn Hisham recites from Abu Ubayda the last half-line, "hoping for his bounties and the goodness of his praise." 2

When he reached the Prophet, the Prophet said to him, as it reached Ibn Ishaq: "O Farwa, did it grieve you what befell your people on the day of al-Radm?" He said: "O Messenger of God, who would be struck as my people were struck on the day of al-Radm and not be grieved!" The Prophet said: "As for that, it has only added to your people's good in Islam." 2 He appointed him over Murad, Zubayd and all of Madhhij, and sent with him Khalid ibn Sa'id ibn al-As to collect the alms. He remained with them in their lands until the Prophet died. 2

Markers of the report

  • The Prophet's question to Farwa, "as it reached me", in Ibn Ishaq. 2
  • The last half-line of the two verses of Farwa is from Abu Ubayda's narration. 2
