Before the conquest of Mecca the Prophet ﷺ sent al-Ala' ibn al-Hadrami to al-Mundhir ibn Sawa al-Abdi, lord of Bahrayn, who became a good Muslim; al-Ala' stayed as the Prophet's governor of Bahrayn until al-Mundhir died after the Prophet and before Bahrayn's apostasy. Before the conquest of Mecca the Prophet sent al-Ala ibn al-Hadrami to al-Mundhir ibn Sawa al-Abdi, lord of Bahrain. He became a Muslim and his Islam was good. 1

The report

Ibn Ishaq relates the account at the end of the delegation of Abd al-Qays: the Prophet had sent al-Ala ibn al-Hadrami (may God be pleased with him) to al-Mundhir ibn Sawa before the conquest of Mecca; he became a Muslim and his Islam was good. He died after the Messenger of God, before the apostasy of the people of Bahrain, while al-Ala was with him as the Prophet's governor over Bahrain. 1 Later sources place this dispatch among the letters to the rulers and kings at the end of the sixth year and the beginning of the seventh. 2

Notes on the report

  • Ibn Ishaq gives the year of the dispatch only as "before the conquest of Mecca". 1

The Letters to Rulers and Kings

In late 6 AH (early 628 CE) following the Hudaybiyya truce, the Prophet initiated an international diplomatic initiative, sending envoys with silver-sealed letters to the major emperors, kings, and regional chiefs of the surrounding world: the Negus of Abyssinia, the Muqawqis of Egypt, Chosroes of Persia, Heraclius of Byzantium, al-Mundhir ibn Sawa of Bahrain, Hawdha ibn Ali of al-Yamama, al-Harith al-Ghassani of Damascus, and the rulers of Oman.
