Summary
In Dhu al-Qa'da of the tenth year of the mission, the Prophet returned to Mecca to resume offering Islam to the tribes and to individuals, since people gathered there for the season. 1 He had been offering it since the fourth year of the mission until the last season before the migration, and he had not offered it to every tribe in a single year. 1
The tribes he offered it to
al-Zuhri counted the tribes to which the Prophet offered himself, none of which responded: Banu Amir ibn Sa'sa'a, Muharib ibn Khasafa, Fazara, Ghassan, Murra, Hanifa, Sulaym, Abs, Banu Nasr, Banu al-Bakka, Kinda, Kalb, al-Harith ibn Ka'b, Udhra and al-Hadarima. 1
Some of the replies
He offered it to Banu Kalb and called them to God, but they did not accept. 2 He offered it to Banu Hanifa, and none of the Arabs gave a more unpleasant reply than they did. 2 He offered it to Banu Amir, and Bahira ibn Firas said: "By God, if I took this youth of Quraysh, I would devour the Arabs with him." He then stipulated that authority should pass to him after the Prophet. The Prophet said that authority belongs to God, who places it where He wills, and they refused him. 2 3
Those who became Muslim from outside Mecca
Shortly after this season, some individuals became Muslim. Suwayd ibn Samit, a poet and the chief of Yathrib, was offered Islam by the Prophet; he said he had the wisdom of Luqman, so it was presented to him. The Prophet said that he had something better than it, recited to him, and he became Muslim. 4 As for Iyas ibn Mu'adh, he came in a delegation from the Aws seeking an alliance with Quraysh against the Khazraj, and the Prophet offered them Islam. 5
Notes for researchers
- The book notes that al-Mansuri was certain that offering Islam to some tribes took place in the season of the tenth year. It does not claim this as certain for every tribe. 1
For young visitors
Each Hajj season the Prophet went to the tribes and offered them Islam. Few of them accepted at first, and some became Muslim later.
