Overview
Al-Salabi says that Barakat ibn Muhammad, sharif of Mecca, submitted to the sultan Selim I after the killing of the sultan Qansuh al-Ghawri, and handed him the keys of the Ka'ba. 1
The event
The effect
The Ottoman sultan became servant of the two holy sanctuaries, and the state endowed many endowments for the holy places. 1
Al-Salabi holds that the annexation of the Hijaz extended Ottoman sovereignty over the Red Sea, so the Portuguese danger was kept away from the Hijaz and its coasts until the end of the eighteenth century. 1
