When the Prophet ﷺ died most people of Mecca meant to renounce Islam; Attab ibn Usayd (may God be pleased with him), its governor, hid; then Suhayl ibn Amr stood, praised God, named the Prophet's death and said it had only increased Islam in strength, and whoever doubted them they would strike his neck; the people drew back and Attab reappeared.

Overview

Ibn Hisham says, on the authority of Abu Ubayda and other people of knowledge, that when the Prophet died most of the people of Mecca resolved to turn back from Islam, until Attab ibn Usayd, the governor of Mecca, feared and hid himself. 1 Suhayl ibn Amr stood up, praised God and extolled Him, mentioned the death of the Prophet, and said that this had only increased Islam in strength: whoever doubts us, we will strike his neck. The people turned back from what they had resolved, and Attab appeared again. 1

Marks of the report

  • The report in Ibn Hisham comes on the authority of Abu Ubayda and "other people of knowledge", not through Ibn Ishaq's chain; it is connected with the Prophet's words to Umar elsewhere: "perhaps he will stand in a position you will not blame" (4/316). 1
  • The margin of the edition identifies Attab as the governor of Mecca on the day the Prophet died. 1
