الندب إلى المطاردة
Medina · 8 Shawwal 3 AH
Overview
The Quraysh pursuit after Uhud: from Medina to Hamra' al-Asad, eight miles south of it, and then the return. The expedition is a continuation of the Battle of Uhud, not an independent expedition 1.
The route
The Muslims had spent the night in Medina after returning from Uhud. Then on the morning of Sunday, the eighth of Shawwal of the 3rd year AH, the Prophet ﷺ called for the march to pursue the enemy, and only those who had witnessed the fighting went out with him 2. They reached Hamra' al-Asad and camped there 1.
He stayed at Hamra' al-Asad on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, then returned to Medina 3. The book does not specify the day of the return.
On the road
The Prophet sent Ma'bad ibn Abi Ma'bad al-Khuza'i to catch up with Abu Sufyan and dissuade him. Ma'bad met him at al-Rawha and told him that Muhammad had come out with a large force, burning with eagerness against Quraysh. The resolve of the Meccan army collapsed, and they withdrew 4. Abu Sufyan then sent a group of riders from Abd al-Qays to threaten the Muslims, but their words only increased the Muslims in faith 3.
Jabir ibn Abdullah asked the Prophet's leave to go out with him, and he granted it 1.
Before the return, the Prophet took Abu Azza al-Jumahi, because he had broken his pledge, and ordered him killed. He also ruled that Mu'awiya ibn al-Mughira, who had remained in Medina spying for Quraysh, should be killed 5.
