Overview

The route of the Banu Mustaliq raid in Sha'ban of the 6th year AH: the Prophet set out from Medina to the water of al-Muraysi' in the area of Qudayd, then returned to Medina after he gave the order to depart 1.

The route

The Prophet set out two nights into Sha'ban, and appointed Zayd ibn Haritha over Medina 2. Al-Rahiq does not describe the stations between Medina and al-Muraysi', so none are listed here.

He reached al-Muraysi', a water belonging to Banu Mustaliq in the area of Qudayd, toward the coast, and the raid took place there 3. After the affair was over, the Prophet remained at al-Muraysi'. A quarrel broke out there over water between a hired man of Umar and another man from Juhayna. Abdullah ibn Ubayy spoke words that angered people, and then the Prophet gave the order to depart at an hour when he did not usually set out 4.

The company travelled through the day and the night until he stopped with the people for a rest, and then they entered Medina 5. Al-Rahiq says the army halted at some stations on the road without naming them, so no place is given here for them.

On the road

On the road, Aisha fell behind the company while looking for a necklace she had lost. She then returned with Safwan ibn al-Mu'attal, after the army had halted at midday. The people of the slander spread the story when they reached Medina 6. During the raid the Prophet married Juwayriya bint al-Harith from among the captives, and the Muslims freed a hundred households of her people 3.

The Expedition of Banu al-Mustaliq (al-Muraysi')

In Sha'ban 6 AH (December 627 CE), the Prophet led an expedition against Banu al-Mustaliq at the watering-place of al-Muraysi' after intelligence revealed their mobilization; following a brief exchange, their forces scattered, their camp was taken, and the Prophet married Juwayriyya bint al-Harith, prompting the Muslims to free a hundred families of her clan.
