Summary

Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr ibn Abd al-Muttalib ibn Hashim al-Hashimi, the Prophet's cousin; Ibn Sa'd places him in the fifth generation of Companions, his mother being Atika bint Abi Wahb ibn Amr al-Makhzumiyya 1. He is not Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam.

Transmission

It is told of al-Waqidi: we know no hadith for him 1.

Hunayn

Al-Zubayr relates through Husayn ibn Ali that among those who stood firm on the day of Hunayn were al-Abbas, Ali, Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr ibn Abd al-Muttalib and others — and so said al-Waqidi, Ibn A'idh and Abu Hudhayfa 1.

His closeness to the Prophet

Al-Mubarrad tells in al-Kamil that Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr came to the Messenger of God, who clothed him in a suit, seated him beside himself and said: "he is my mother's son" — his father being dutiful to him. It is said al-Zubayr ibn Abd al-Muttalib used to dance the Prophet as an infant 1.

His death

Al-Waqidi and others said he was killed at Ajnadayn in year 13 AH. Al-Waqidi said the first casualty was a Byzantine champion who duelled Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr and whom he killed, then a second came out and was killed — and Abdullah was later found slain in the battle with ten dead Byzantines around him. He was about thirty when the Prophet died 1.
